Co-discovered GLP-1 biology underpinning incretin drugs

Ph.D., Research Associate Professor, The Rockefeller U.

Biography
Dr. Mojsov is the biochemist who pinpointed and synthesized the bio-active fragment GLP-1(7-37), proving it to be the long-sought incretin hormone that powerfully stimulates insulin secretion. Her 1986-87 workcreating peptide analogs, antibodies, and the first GLP-1 assaysprovided the essential foundation for todays GLP-1based therapies for diabetes and obesity. A native of North Macedonia (former Yugoslavia) she earned her Ph.D. at Rockefeller University (1978), remained as a postdoctoral fellow, and has since continued her research there on peptide hormones and metabolic regulation. Dr. Mojsov is co-inventor on key GLP-1 patents and shared both the 2024 LaskerDeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award and the 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for her seminal contributions to hormone-based therapeutics.
