Speaker Profile
Biography
Michael co-founded Element Biosciences and brings more than 10 years of innovation and discovery in genomics. Previously, he was an Associate Principal Scientist at Illumina, where he pioneered advanced sequencing technologies for both single molecule and ensemble-based methods and developed high throughput assays for protein evolution and discovery. Before Illumina, he worked at Life Technologies innovating new single molecule sequencing technologies. Over almost 10 years in the sequencing industry, Michael has earned four independent sequencing technology patents and published one of those technologies in Nature Communications.
Michael holds a PhD in physical chemistry from Boston College and completed postdoctoral training at MIT, where he combined advanced microscopy with high throughput assays to study complex biochemical systems. Over 25 years in science, he has authored more than 35 publications and filed more than 25 patents spanning plasmonics, sequencing, enzymology, instrumentation, surface chemistry, DNA amplification, assay discovery, and microscopy.

Multimodal Tissue Screening With Variant Detection
Direct in sample sequencing on AVITI24 detects variants and multimodal readouts in intact tissue. Segmentation and cell typing, plus customizable immunofluorescent protein detection, support fresh frozen and FFPE samples, with validation in breast, lung, colon, and pancreas. Fixed, custom, and pan solid tumor hotspot panels enable targeted profiling.
