Biography
Julia Carnevale, M.D., is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and a physician-scientist specializing in gastrointestinal cancers and cancer immunotherapy. She treats patients while leading a laboratory focused on discovering and engineering new therapeutic strategies for tumors that remain resistant to current immunotherapies. Her research uses functional genomics, CRISPR screening, tumor models, and immune-cell engineering to identify mechanisms that shape response and resistance. A major focus is developing approaches that improve T-cell activity and reprogram suppressive elements of the tumor microenvironment, including myeloid cells, so that immune therapies can work more effectively in solid tumors. Dr. Carnevale earned her undergraduate degree at Stanford University and her M.D. at Harvard Medical School, then completed internal medicine residency and oncology training at UCSF. Her program bridges mechanistic cancer biology with translational development, aiming to move discoveries from laboratory models toward therapies that can be tested in patients with difficult-to-treat gastrointestinal malignancies.
