Biography
Charles Chiu, M.D. Ph.D. is a Professor at UCSF, Director of the UCS-FAbbott Viral Diagnostics and Discovery Center (VDDC), and Associate Director of the UCSF Clinical Microbiology Laboratory. Chiu currently leads a translational research laboratory focused on clinical metagenomic sequencing assay development for infectious diseases and genomic investigation and surveillance of emerging pathogens, including the SARSCoV2 coronavirus. He also uses RNASeq transcriptome profiling to develop predictive models using machine learning for host response based diagnosis of COVID19 and other infections. Chius work is supported by funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Defense, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), philanthropy, and the California Initiative to Advance Precision Medicine. He has authored more than 100 peer reviewed publications (20 on COVID19), holds over 15 patents and patent applications, and serves on the scientific advisory board for Mammoth Biosciences, Danaher Dx, Biomesense, and Flightpath.

Biography
Dr. Miller is a board certified clinical pathologist with expertise in microbiology and infectious disease diagnostics. He has specialized in development and validation of molecular diagnostic testing for pathogen detection and characterization, with a focus on the application of broadspectrum identification methods to patient diagnostics. Much of his career has involved use of next generation sequencing of microorganisms to diagnose infections and enable detailed strain characterization by genome analysis tools, with a goal to improve clinical testing and public health monitoring.

Biography
Dr. Catherine Hogan is a medical microbiologist, infectious diseases physician and epidemiologist with a passion for innovative diagnostic methods. Her research focuses on infectious diseases diagnostics, clinical impact assessment of diagnostic methods including metagenomics, and tropical medicine. Her work has been recognized through several awards including the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada. Furthermore, she serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Clinical Virology, and is an Editorial Board member for the Journal of Clinical Microbiology.

Biography
Laura Filkins is the Clinical Director of the Microbiology and Molecular Virology Laboratories at Children's Health System of Texas. After receiving a doctoral degree at Dartmouth College, Dr. Filkins completed fellowship training in Medical and Public Health Microbiology through the University of Utah and ARUP Laboratories. Dr. Filkins is a certified clinical microbiologist by the American Board of Medical Microbiology. Dr. Filkins research interests focus on the integration of emerging technologies for pathogen detection into the clinical setting and how to guide optimal utilization of these new diagnostic tests. She is the PI or CoI on three active grants for the development and evaluation of new diagnostic methods and has authored co authored over 60 journal articles, clinical practice guidelines, chapters, and published abstracts. She has served for clinical practice and technology innovation committees for the American Society for Microbiology, American Society for Clinical Pathology, and the American Association for Clinical Chemistry.

Biography
Robert's work focuses on the use of next generation sequencing in microbiology and infectious disease testing. He developed Taxonomer, the metagenomics data analysis platform, utilized by IDbyDNA as its central technology. Robert's work has been supported in part by the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation. Previously, Robert was the Chief Medical Officer of IDbyDNA, a Medical Director in Infectious Diseases at ARUP Laboratories, a faculty member in the Department of Pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine, and a postdoc at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health. Robert received Medical degrees from the Julius-Maximilians-University in Wuerzburg, Germany and a Masters of Public Health from Columbia University where he also trained in clinical pathology and served as Chief Clinical Pathology Resident. Robert is a board certified Clinical Pathologist and Medical Microbiologist.

Biography
Sivan is an innovator in artificial intelligence, pioneering the development of complex computational and data platforms, as well as novel machine learning models designed to address critical challenges in human disease. Prior to Karius, Sivan was a cofounder and Chief Technology Officer at Lifecode, where he led the development of the analytical platform and validation of several clinical assays across oncology and rare hereditary diseases. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Technion Israel Institute of Technology, and continued to Stanford’s Artificial Intelligence Lab to pursue his postdoctoral research.

Ariel Ganz applies her PhD in nutrition from Cornell to her research at Stanford on precision mental health and well-being. Her personal journey with mental health inspires her research, which has been published in leading academic journals across mental health, nutritional biochemistry, and precision medicine. Working with Precision Medicine Pioneer Dr. Michael Snyder, Ariel is at the forefront of applying multi-omics to clinical mental health research. Ariel also co-teaches the Engineering Wellness course at Stanford, and is a founding partner at Arben Ventures, championing early-stage startups at the cutting edge of deep-tech health and wellness. As a co-founder of the Stanford Mental Healthcare Innovations Summit, and with her speaking engagements at venues like CERN, NextMed Health, and university classrooms, Ariel is deeply committed to amplifying interdisciplinary connection, and transformative ideas in mental health.

Biography
Dr. Gaston directs the VUMC MIDL where he oversees clinical testing of molecular infectious disease diagnostic testing. He completed his MD and PhD degrees at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, internal medicine residency at the University of Utah, infectious diseases fellowship at YaleNew Haven Hospital, and medical microbiology fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. His research interests include implementation of molecular methods, including next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, for rapid, robust, and reliable pathogen detection and characterization. Additionally, he cofounded the Consortium for Clinical Metagenomics in Infectious Diseases (CCMID.org), a collaboration working to advance diagnostic sequencing for infectious diseases. The focus of these local and broad efforts is to improve the health of patients afflicted by infectious diseases.

Biography
Dr. Esther Babady is a clinical microbiologist with board certification from the American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM). She received her PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and completed a postdoctoral Clinical Microbiology fellowship both at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Her research interests include rapid diagnosis of infections in immunocompromised hosts, the development of molecular diagnostic tests for fungal and viral diagnostics, and the evaluation of the utility of molecular tests on clinical outcomes. She has published extensively on these topics. She currently serves as President of the PanAmerican Society for Clinical Virology (PASCV) and cochair of the Fungal Diagnostics Laboratory Consortium (FDLC). She is Senior Editor for the journal Microbiology Spectrum and an editor for the Journal of Clinical Virology and the Journal of Molecular Diagnostics. She is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and a fellow of the Infectious Disease Society of America.

Biography
Dr. Monica Fung is an infectious disease physician at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) specializing in infectious complications among transplant and immunocompromised patients. Dr. Fung obtained her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed her residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center followed by fellowship in infectious diseases at UCSF. She currently serves as CoDirector of the UCSF Transplant and Immunocompromised Host ID Program, Director of UCSF ID Inpatient Services, and Director of the ID Fellowship Transplant ID Track. Dr. Fung's research includes using metagenomic sequencing and other innovative technologies to diagnose and manage infectious diseases.

Biography
Dr. Kristian Andersen is a renowned virologist and infectious disease expert who is currently a professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Scripps Research in La Jolla, California. He received his PhD in bioinformatics and computational biology from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Oxford and the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Andersen's research focuses on understanding the evolution and spread of viral pathogens, with a particular emphasis on emerging infectious diseases. He has made significant contributions to our understanding of the Zika virus epidemic, the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa, and the COVID19 pandemic, among others. His work involves a combination of cutting edge genomic and computational techniques to track the spread of viral pathogens in real-time, and to inform public health efforts to contain and control these diseases.

Colleen Cutcliffe is the cofounder and CEO of Pendulum Therapeutics, a biotech startup in San Francisco. The company's mission is to create probiotics as effective as prescription drugs, without any side effects. The company's first offering, Pendulum Glucose Control, is the only probiotic in existence that has lowered blood sugar spikes and A1C levels in a clinical trial welcome news for the 122 million Americans living with diabetes and prediabetes. Prominent Clinical and Silicon Valley investors have taken notice: Meritech Capital, Sequoia Capital, True Ventures, Khosla Ventures and the Mayo Clinic have led investments totalling almost $150M in Pendulum Therapeutics. Colleen received a Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology from Johns Hopkins University and a B.S. in biochemistry from Wellesley College. She completed her postdoctoral research at Northwestern Medicines Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. Colleen lives in Menlo Park, Calif., with her husband, two daughters, and two rambunctious dogs.

An inventor of Siolta's technology, her research in Dr. Susan Lynch's lab at UCSF, also a cofounder of Siolta, provided the foundational research for the company's formation. Professor Jack A Gilbert earned his Ph.D. from Unilever and Nottingham University, UK in 2002, and received his postdoctoral training at Queens University, Canada. From 20052010 he was a senior scientist at Plymouth Marine Laboratory, UK; and from 20102018 he was Group Leader for Microbial Ecology at Argonne National Laboratory, a Professor of Surgery, and Director of The Microbiome Center at University of Chicago. In 2019 he moved to University of California San Diego, where he is a Professor in Pediatrics and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Associate Vice Chancellor for Marine Science, and Director of both the Microbiome and Metagenomics Center and the Microbiome Core Facility. Dr. Gilbert uses molecular analysis to test fundamental hypotheses in microbial ecology.

Biography
Fiona's research at Genentech leverages clinical trial data and microbiome samples to interrogate host microbiome interactions in inflammatory bowel disease, with the ultimate goal of identifying novel therapeutic targets. Prior to Genentech, Fiona was a PhD student in Ami Bhatt's lab at Stanford, where her thesis work implicated the gut microbiome as a reservoir for stereotypical as well as unexpected bloodstream pathogens in immunocompromised patients. Additionally, Fiona collaborated with researchers at the University of the Witwatersrand to profile the gut microbiome of understudied South African populations undergoing rapid lifestyle transition. Fiona is passionate about using computational approaches to generate testable hypotheses to enable identification of causal roles for gut microbes in disease pathobiology.

In 2019, he was named one of the 10 Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine by the National Academy of Medicine, and in 2021 he was appointed to the Board on Life Sciences of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. He is also the 2023 recipient of the Alexander Mildred Seelig Award from the American Nutrition Association.

Currently, the Chief of the STD Control Branch at California Department of Public Health and the former Chair of the California COVID19 Testing Task Force. A recent, Senior HIV TB Care and Treatment Advisor for the United States CDC to the country of Uganda and the previous medical director of the Los Angeles Region Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center. Finally she was previously an Associate Professor of Clinical Family Medicine at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine.

Biography
Maddalena Adorno completed her postdoctoral training in Stem Cell and Aging Biology at Stanford University, where her discoveries in stem cell biology were considered amongst the most important research at Stanford University in 2013. She has published 13 papers in high impact journals including Nature, Cell and Science, and is an inventor on several patents in cancer biology, aging and degenerative diseases. She was also the cofounder of StemGuard, Inc., a biotech company developing neuroprotectors for degenerative diseases. Maddalena was an invited speaker at the Time 100 Health Summit in 2019, where she presented senoblockers as potential therapeutics for aging. She sits on the advisory board of KinKeepers and advises the Stanford Down Syndrome Research Center. Maddalena received her M.Sc. in Medical Biotechnology magna cum laude and a Ph.D. in Biomedicine from University of Padova, Italy.
